At its December meeting, the Fed decided to decrease the bond buying program—quantitative easing—by $10 billion to $75 billion. Wednesday's decision takes that down another notch and lends credence to a widely held market belief that the Fed will wrap up QE by the end of 2014. The new balance will see purchases of $30 billion a month in mortgage-backed securities and $35 billion in Treasurys.
China’s manufacturing contracted for the first time in six months in January, adding to stresses in the world’s second-biggest economy, a private survey of purchasing managers indicated.
A Purchasing Managers’ Index (EC11CHPM) fell to 49.5 from 50.5 in December, HSBC Holdings Plc and Markit Economics said in a statement today.
The risk of a default of a high-yield trust, averted this week by a bailout, focused investor attention on the dangers shadow banking poses for China’s financial system. Authorities are also grappling with housing-market overheating and plans to reduce the state’s role in the economy, while trying to avoid a slowdown to below the 7.2 percent growth rate that Premier Li Keqiang says is needed to support job creation.

The Turkish central bank raised its overnight lending rate to 12 percent from 7.75 percent and the overnight borrowing rate to 8 percent from 3.5 percent late Tuesday, in a surprisingly strong move to defend the country's embattled currency.
The lira immediately strengthened to 2.2 to the dollar from 2.253 after the decision. The rate hike was much sharper than expected; eight economists polled by the Wall Street Journal had expected an increase of three percentage points at the most.
