Banks will be launching a mega financial inclusion drive on Thursday as part of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and lakhs of accounts are likely to be opened on the day.

As part of the initiative, each account-holder will be provided with a passbook and a RuPay debit/ATM card which carries free accident insurance cover for Rs.1 lakh.  Further, an overdraft of Rs.2,000 will be provided to each account-holder after satisfactory operation of the account for six months.

Many banks have already conducted preparatory camps across the country through their branches and deputed senior executives to the field to monitor the opening of accounts in village and district level camps.

According to a circular issued by the Reserve Bank of India to banks, the know-your-customer (KYC) norms were relaxed to facilitate easy opening of accounts.

Snapdeal.com, India’s largest online marketplace has announced that Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus, Tata Sons, has made a personal investment in the company. The company did not disclose the exact amount Tata has invested.

Snapdeal currently houses over 5 million products across 500+ diverse categories from over 50,000 sellers. Speaking about this, Kunal Bahl, co-Founder & CEO, Snapdeal.com said in a press statement, “This is a very proud and exciting moment for the entire Snapdeal family. An investment by a legendary and respected figure like Mr. Tata is an excellent validation of our focused strategy on building a long-term enterprise and marks the start of a very important phase for the company.

All Eye's On Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen's speech on Friday at a policymakers' meeting in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, which could provide clues on the timing of an interest-rate hike.

Policymakers referred to as doves are viewed as being supportive of interest rates remaining low.

Yellen speaks at the Fed's annual Jackson Hole symposium at in a speech that's been anticipated for weeks and was widely expected to be typically dovish.

Yellen's speech topic is "Re-Evaluating Labor Market Dynamics" and she was expected to repeat her comments that the Fed needs to maintain easy policy that will help the labor market heal. Fed watchers were also hoping to get more guidance as to what metrics Yellen is watching on the labor market.

The Cabinet on Wednesday approved a blueprint for the Digital India programme, which envisages all government services be delivered electronically by 2018. It also seeks to provide unique identities to all citizens.

The programme aims to “bring public accountability through mandated delivery of government services electronically” and provide a “unique ID and e-Pramaan, based on authentic and standards-based interoperable and integrated government applications and data bases.

Digital India would provide “high-speed internet as a core utility” down to the Gram Panchayat level and a “cradle-to-grave digital identity — unique, lifelong, online and authenticable”, said an official statement, adding the unique IDs would facilitate identification, authentication and delivery of benefits.

The government release added the Digital India would prepare India for a knowledge future and “to realise IT (Indian talent) + IT (information technology) = IT (India tomorrow)”

The equity markets may not have been the most favoured asset class five years ago, but seven of the companies in BSE 200 have given more than ten-fold returns since then while 20 have given returns of between five and 10 times. Outracing all others, Eicher Motors the manufacturer of Royal Enfield bikes, has seen its stock multiply 24 times in the past five years from Rs 420 in 2009 to about Rs 10,000 now, excluding dividends paid out during this period. Analysts continue to remain bullish on the stock.
Four of the seven ten-baggers in the past five years are directly or indirectly related to the auto industry. The other three are Bajaj FinanceMotherson Sumi and Amara Raja Batteries.

Two companies are from the consumer industries. One company, Page Industries, the owner of the Jockey brand, is the market leader in inner wear while another, Supreme Industries, is the leader in plastic furniture. Housing finance company Gruh Finance has also fetched good returns for investors.
