FED MINUTES OUT TODAY
The Federal Reserve is set to release the minutes from its January FOMC meeting Today, and market participants are sure to closely sift through them for any clues about the future of quantitative easing.
The Fed's minutes could consequently shed some light on exactly how much weakness the FOMC needs to see before it deviates from its course of tapering quantitative easing by $10 billion per month.
The Government has decided to take back coal mines awarded to some 50 companies, including Adani Power, JSPL, Tata Group, Rungta Mines, Arcelor Mittal, Lanco, Hindalco and GMR.
This could spell big trouble for companies that have invested in end-use projects, as they will now be left without a fuel source.
According to the Government, blocks that were not able to achieve the requisite milestones have been de-allocated.
In some blocks, such as Fatehpur, allocated to SKS Ispat and Power and Prakash Industries, the Power Ministry pointed out that SKS Ispat had invested Rs.2,486 crore in its end-use plant.
The Rampia block, allocated to Sterlite Energy, GMR Energy, Arcelor Mittal, Lanco Group, Navbharat Power and Reliance Energy, is in a similar situation. Here, Sterlite has invested Rs.8,287 crore, GMR, Rs.5,600 crore, and Lanco, Rs.4,800 crore to set up end-use plants. The Sterlite and GMR plants have been commissioned
Facebook has agreed to acquire messaging service WhatsApp for approximately $16 billion, including $4 billion in cash and about $12 billion worth of Facebook shares, Facebook said in a release.
The agreement also provides for an additional $3 billion in restricted stock, to be granted to WhatsApp's founders and employees, that will vest over four years once the deal closes.
It is Facebook's largest purchase deal to date.
WhatsApp has more than 450 million users a month and nearly 1 million sign-ups daily, according to Facebook.
"Our mission is to make the world more open and connected," Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post. "We do this by building services that help people share any type of content with any group of people they want. WhatsApp will help us do this by continuing to develop a service that people around the world love to use every day."
Facebook said it would keep WhatsApp as a separate service, just as it did with Instagram, which it bought for about $715.3 million.
The social media giant also said WhatsApp co-founder and CEO Jan Koum would join Facebook's board.
