A month after touching a record high, consumer price index-based inflation came down to a three-month low of 9.87 per cent in December, thanks to vegetable prices.

This has led quite a a few economists to expect the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to retain, instead of raising, its policy rate at the review due later this month. CPI-based inflation had touched 11.16 per cent in November.

Official data issued on Monday showed the rate of price rise down to a single digit in December after two  months. However, in rural areas it remains in double digits, at 10.49 per cent, though down from 11.66  per cent in November. In urban areas, it fell to 9.11 per cent from the earlier 10.53 per cent.

India on Monday marked three years since its last case of polio was reported, a major public health success for a country that until recently accounted for most of the world’s cases.

Proud day for all of us as Indians,” Junior Home Minister RPN Singh wrote on Twitter. “India is polio-free for three years.” That is the official time period without a case for a country to be considered free of a disease by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The achievement was due to a massive immunisation programme, Health Ministry spokeswoman Manisha Verma said, adding that the WHO was to formally certify India polio-free on 11 February after checking the data.

For example, Thalmic Labs has created an armband, called the Myo, that uses electrical activity in the wearer's muscles to control everything from a computer to smartphones to drones

Other companies, including Leap Motion and Microsoft, are developing gesture-control products, but they generally work via a camera-based system, limiting a user's mobility. Myo lets a user move about freely.
