The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) on Sunday set the stage for launch of Real Estate and Infrastructure Investment Trusts, commonly referred to as REITs and InvIT.
In the final regulations, the market regulator has made some major changes to what it had proposed earlier. These include allowing foreign institutional investor (FII) participation and reducing the minimum asset size for a REIT. Those in the sector said these two new instruments had the potential of attracting nearly Rs 1 lakh crore to the cash-starved real estate and infrastructure sector.
The proposals were cleared at a meeting of the Sebi board, which was addressed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. In Budget 2014-15, the finance minister had announced giving a pass-through status to these trusts.
A week of surplus rainfall has filled reservoirs to a level above the 10-year average and helped the monsoon deficit contract further to 17 per cent, further easing the situation.
Rainfall was 5 per cent above normal on Thursday, with heavy rains recorded over Rajasthan, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka.
Heavy rains over the past few days filled the country's major reservoirs to 57 per cent (88.735 billion cubic metres) of the total capacity of 155.05 billion cubic metres, down from 69.5 per cent last year, but better than the 10-year average of 49 per cent.
The reservoir position is better than the El Nino years of 2009 and 2012. On August 6, 2009, water storage in 81 reservoirs was 54.84 billion cubic metres (bcm) and on August 8, 2012, it was 64.48 bcm in 84 reservoirs.

A few skeletons are likely to tumble out of the cupboard with the end of the country’s regional stock exchanges — among other things, in the form of what could be the largest-ever case of corporate disappearances in India.
Records and data from eleven regional exchanges reveals around 700 listed companies have likely vanished, without a trace of these entities at their registered addresses — many times more than the 87 currently identified as ‘vanishing companies’ in official records. The exchanges, too, have received no correspondence from these companies for a long time. According to investor association estimates, the total value of the ‘vanishing companies’ could be in excess of Rs 29,000 crore.
