The union cabinet will likely take up a proposal to liberalise foreign direct investment regime for defence and Railways today evening.

The foreign investment limit in railways is proposed to be raised to up to 100 per cent while that in the defence sector will go up to 49 per cent from 26 per cent allowed presently.

"Both FDI proposals, for railways and defence will be taken up by the Cabinet on Wednesday. All security related concerns raised by home affairs ministry have been addressed adequately," said a government official.

Worries that tensions between Russia and Ukraine could escalate into a military conflict sent stocks spiraling lower and could continue to hang over the market.

The markets had been jittery early Tuesday on reports that Russia has amassed 20,000 troops just miles from the Ukraine border. But an afternoon headline sent out by a news service quoting the Polish foreign minister drove stocks even lower, as traders focused on his warning that Russia is poised to invade and pressure Ukraine.

A few skeletons are likely to tumble out of the cupboard with the end of the country’s regional stock exchanges — among other things, in the form of what could be the largest-ever case of corporate disappearances in India.
Records and data from eleven regional exchanges reveals around 700 listed companies have likely vanished, without a trace of these entities at their registered addresses — many times more than the 87 currently identified as ‘vanishing companies’ in official records. The exchanges, too, have received no correspondence from these companies for a long time. According to investor association estimates, the total value of the ‘vanishing companies’ could be in excess of Rs 29,000 crore.
